We’ve Forgotten

“I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.”

Taken from the Nicene Creed.

What are we acknowledging with these words? Visible: our earth, our universe, and all that is contained in these places that we can see.
Invisible: All that we cannot see. What is it we cannot see? We cannot see the beings of good and evil we call angels and demons. They are real. We cannot see heaven. We cannot see hell. We cannot see Purgatory, but our faith teaches us that our souls will live forever, and at our judgment, when see the face of the living God, we will be sent to one of these places forever, except for Purgatory, where the effects of our sins on our souls will be purged from us so that we might face the living God totally purified and cleansed.

When was the last time you thought about what is to come? Eternity is a long time. It’s forever, and right now, it’s invisible to us. We cannot see what is beyond our plane of visible, and we have forgotten the simple fact that our souls were made for eternity. In eternity we will live forever. Where we live our spiritual lives is up to us now. We have forgotten that we are spiritual beings in a physical body working our way home to heaven.

Our world is passing. We are looking at an evil world in which we are challenged to be the hands, voice and feet of Jesus. We are challenged to show mercy and love, and to be the example of Jesus and His teachings on earth. We are asked to do the difficult. Some are asked to give their physical lives in His service. Some are asked to evangelize. (We are all asked to teach His Word to the world.) satan is the great deceiver. he’s convinced so many that he doesn’t exist. he’s convinced our world that what is sinful is not, and what is not sinful is. he knows what waits beyond us, beyond our physical lives, and don’t doubt this fact, satan wants your soul. he wants every soul he can steal from God. satan hates God.

God is a spiritual being, and He is greater than any evil in this visible or in the invisible world. God is divine. God is eternal. God loved us so much that He sent His only Son that we might have eternal life. God knows we are spiritual beings, and He longs to have us with Him. He gave us the gift of Purgatory so that one day, when our lives are over, and we are not cleansed of our sins, we can go to Purgatory and be cleansed. The suffering is great there, but once in Purgatory the soul knows that it’s final destination is heaven, not hell.

I look at my hands as I type. I see no hint of a soul in them. I see no hint of a soul when I look in the mirror. I only see that which is physical not spiritual. Just as our bodies must develop for survival, so must our souls be nurtured. satan has convinced our culture that nurturing comes from pleasure and not from suffering. That which is finite is sought. That which is infinite is not. Power. Money. Drugs. Success of the individual. Doing it our way. Doing it by ourselves. The self is the center of life. Our souls cannot be nurtured and fed by the self. The soul can only be nurutured through contact with God.

Prayer. Suffering. Living a life that is not self centered, but is centered on God. Putting God first in our lives, rather than last. Dying to ourselves. Giving all to God. Standing up for that which is right, not judging, loving others with correction and teaching them of the goodness of God. These elements nurture our souls.

The average human life span is now around 72 years of age. That’s really not a very long time to live. Some animals live just as long, but they have no purpose in living. We have forgotten our purpose in living, and that is to know God, to love God, and to serve Him, not only in this world, but also in the next.

We’ve forgotten we have souls. We have let satan trick us into not believing this fact. We have souls. Our souls will live forever. We also have the gift of free will. We can choose to live for God or not. Like John the Baptist, today, many voices are crying out in the wilderness trying to remind people that we are sinful creatures, and we are. satan does not want you to believe in sin. satan does not want you to believe that God loves you. What a lie!

Jesus, the second divine person of the trinity, came down to earth, both God and Man, and through the gift of His death on the cross, He opened the doors of heaven for us. Through the gift of free will, we can choose God, or not, but to choose God, and to live our lives as Children of God is not easy. The world hates God. Jesus reminded us that the world hated Him first. He offers that to us as His consolation. The world is satan’s now, but it will not be forever. We need to be aware that what we see is passing. We might live longer than 72 years, but we might not, and if we’re not ready to see God, we can only hope for His great mercy, for He is also a God of Justice. There is a right and a wrong. Sin is real. Think about what you will say when you see the face of God and you know what your fate will be. Pray. Drop to your knees now and pray. Go to Church. Receive the Sacrament of reconciliation and be reconiled with God.

It’s true. satan is real. he hates God. he wants your soul.
I heard a self proclaimed athiest on a TV commercial one day say that he was not afraid of burning in hell forever. I am. I don’t want to be there. I have a holy fear of God for He is Almighty. Holy is His name. Pray. Pray for the salvation of your soul. Change. Jesus told the woman caught in adultery, “Go and sin no more.” Change. Go and sin no more.
